How do you network as a beginner?

Networking is essential for any professional to develop their career, but especially so for those who are just starting out.

The first step is to find people who can help you get your foot in the door. Look for people in your field of interest, or even outside of it, who have connections with people who work in your field. For example, if you're interested in working with startups, try finding someone who works at an investment firm in your city who has connections with startup founders or venture capitalists. Or look for someone who works at an agency that has clients that are big brands that you'd like to work for someday.

Next, make sure that you're connecting with the right people! You don't want to just blindly send out emails to any old person and call it networking—it's important that you only contact people who are likely to be able to help you achieve what you want out of them (like landing a job).

Finally, follow up! This can be tricky because it's easy to feel like it's too much work or doesn't matter enough when there's so many other things on our plates already—but it does matter!

Here are some other tips for making the most of your networking efforts:

  1. Be prepared. Before going to any event, make sure you know what kinds of people will be there and what kinds of things they'll be interested in discussing. If you're at a "startup" event, for example, you probably won't want to talk about your love of classical music or how much you enjoy knitting (unless you're there as part of a knitting club!). And if you're at an event for young professionals from an engineering background, talking about your vacation to Florida might not seem relevant—even if it was one of the best experiences of your life!

  2. Get on social media! Most conferences have official hashtags that can help attendees connect with each other and find out more about upcoming events. If they don't have an official hashtag, look up #[conference name] on Twitter and see what else people are talking about at that conference!

  3. Make friends! It's nice when someone takes the time to give advice or help out a newbie like yourself.
