What are the general principles of coaching?

The general principles of coaching are:

  1. Coaches should use the coach-client relationship to help clients develop their own capacity to solve problems and make decisions, rather than just providing advice and information.

  2. Coaches should focus on helping clients achieve their goals, rather than the coach's goals or agenda.

  3. Coaches should hold in confidence what they learn in the coach-client relationship unless clients give permission to share information with others or it is required by law (such as reporting child abuse).

  4. The coach helps the client understand the client's problem and its causes.

  5. The coach helps the client develop strategies to deal with the problem and its causes by exploring solutions and alternatives, evaluating them, and helping the client choose one that best meets their needs.

  6. The coach works with the client to develop a plan for implementing this solution, including specific goals and objectives for each step in the process, as well as timelines for achieving those goals and objectives.

Coaching is a conversation between two people, one of whom is the coach and one of whom is the coach. The coach helps the coach to develop his or her skills and abilities by giving feedback and advice. The coach is not an expert on the coach’s field, but rather provides support and guidance in that area.

A coach offers guidance based on their experience, values, and expertise, but does not make decisions for the coach. Coaches do not give orders or tell their clients what to do; instead they ask questions and encourage them to think about how they can improve their situation or get things done better next time around.

Coaching is focused on helping people achieve practical outcomes rather than just talking about emotions or other internal experiences. It’s about actionable steps towards improvement over time rather than simply finding a way to feel better about yourself today (though this may be one of your goals!).
