What is Customer Development?

Customer Development is a methodology for building products and services that are useful to customers. It is an alternative to traditional product development, which focuses on building products that are technically feasible. Customer Development aims to understand the needs of potential customers with interviews and surveys, as well as by observing them in their natural environments.

Most commonly, Customer Development is used by startups to validate business ideas. However, it can be applied to any type of product or service at any stage of development—from concept to launch.

Customer development is the process of getting to know your customers, understanding their needs and motivations, and building a product that fits them.

The purpose of customer development is to ensure your product will be used by customers. It's a way of gaining insight into what kinds of features they want, how they use them, and how they'll react when you add new features.

You can't build a product without knowing who uses it and why—and if you don't have this information, all your work will be wasted.

Customer development is a strategy for building products that starts with understanding the needs of potential customers. The goal of customer development is to create a product that people want and are willing to pay for, rather than creating a product first and then trying to sell it later.

The idea behind customer development is to start by identifying a market for your product, then designing an offering that meets those needs as closely as possible. You can do this by talking with potential customers and asking them questions like:

  • What problem does your product solve?
  • How much would someone pay for it?
  • When would they buy it (if at all)?
  • What features would make it easier for them to use?

We've all heard the old saying, "if you build it, they will come," right?

Well, that's not exactly true. Building something great isn't enough—you have to know who your customers are and what they need before you build anything. The only way you can do that is by talking to them!

The customer development process is a four-step framework for helping startups find, test, and validate their ideas.

The customer development process is a way to create products that customers want. It involves four steps:

  1. Identify the problem you're trying to solve for your customers. Have you ever thought about why you, personally, need this product? What does it do for you? How does it make your life easier?

  2. Find out what other people are doing to solve this problem. Talk to friends, family members, and coworkers about how they solve the problem. Ask them what's worked for them and what hasn't worked.

  3. Come up with different solutions to the problem that are unique to YOUR business—make sure they're not already being done by someone else! This is where you'll be able to set yourself apart from the competition because no one else has thought of these solutions yet!

  4. Test out each solution on potential users in order to find out which one works best! Ask them questions about how well each solution worked for them and why or why not, then use this information when deciding which solution will become part of your final product offering!
