What is Tuckman's model theory?

Tuckman's model theory is a model for the stages of team formation. According to the theory, teams go through four phases: forming, storming, norming, and performing.

The forming stage is characterized by uncertainty about roles and relationships. The storming stage is marked by conflict between members who are trying to impose their own ideas on others. The norming stage is characterized by members reaching consensus and feeling comfortable with one another. Finally, the performing phase sees members working together effectively toward a common goal.

Tuckman's model of group development is a four-stage model that describes how groups develop over time. The model includes:

Forming: This stage occurs when the group first forms and members are trying to get to know each other and work out their roles in the group. Members tend to be cautious and reserved during this stage.

Storming: In this stage, conflict begins as members begin to express their opinions about the direction of the group, or who should have what role. There may also be power struggles within the group as each member tries to assert themselves as an individual and stake out territory.

Norming: As conflict begins to subside and members start getting along better, they tend to develop a stable system of norms for how things are done in the group—for example, by agreeing on how meetings will be conducted or how decisions will be made.

Performing: The final stage of Tuckman's model describes how well the group functions once it has reached stability; members are now able to work together effectively toward achieving goals set by higher management or by themselves as a team.
